Abstract

Existing technology cannot adequately address growing needs of submillimeter wave applications. The emerging approaches, such as Quantum Cascade Lasers or terahertz sources using interband transitions operate involve photonics and are limited to cryogenic temperatures.Deep scaled down HEMTs,InP and SiGe HBTs,and even advanced Si MOSFETs are trying to reach the low frequency bound of this range. In this paper,we consider a plasma wave electronics approach for generation and detection of submillimeter wave radiation. This approach that relies on the excitation of electron density haves rather than on the electron drift shows great promise for submillimeter wave applications.
