Abstract

This dataset contains the aggregate and derived data underlying the study “Physician workforce planning under retirement pressure: national supply, specialty allocation and local recruitment in Italy”. It includes data on medical-school capacity, medical graduates, specialist-training capacity and allocation, ENPAM pension uptake, projected physician retirements, SSN physician and general-practitioner headcounts, regional workforce trajectories, administrative specialist-training benchmarks, and a structured sentinel sample of physician recruitment procedures. The dataset also includes annual demographic-replacement flow scenarios for 2025–2031, with completion and graduation-timing sensitivity analyses, and the source audit used to reconstruct the administrative training benchmark and recruitment indicators. Data are derived from publicly available institutional and administrative sources, including AGENAS, MUR, ENPAM, ANAAO Assomed, OECD, Ministry of Health/ISTAT/Co.Ge.A.P.S., Conferenza Stato-Regioni and regional or institutional recruitment archives. The different data constructs represent non-interchangeable stages of the physician workforce pipeline and should not be interpreted as components of a single workforce balance. Projected graduate-minus-retirement differences are demographic-replacement scenarios and do not constitute forecasts of workforce surplus.
