Abstract

Fixed Phrases are less fixed than language users believe. But what kind of variation do canonical forms undergo? And how can these variations be retrieved from a corpus? This paper examines the idiom LIKE A RED RAG TO A BULL in the Bank of English. The attested variants are compared to the twin canonical forms (British and American), and considerations are made regarding the grammatical and semantic consequences of variation.
