Abstract
[On the curious paradox of Bernard Mandeville: private vices, public benefits.] The fable of the bees by Bernand de Mandeville is a satirical poem in which vice is praised for its function in achieving economic, social, and moral prosperity. The large commercial companies of the modern era are forced to abandon the nostalgic references to the golden age in which simplicity, frugality, and individual virtues contributed to the collective well-being. The proliferation of needs and diffusion of vices guide economic and political action that prefers to observe men as they are rather than as they should be.
