Abstract
[Freedom between kitsch and mise en abyme: Reflections on The Unbearable Lightness of Being] The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a novel that incorporates the essayistic form. This narrative element provides Kundera’s protagonists with a touchstone for interrogating the nature of freedom. The Kunderian category of kitsch functions as the conceptual space in which the fate—and the rejection—of freedom unfold. Like many contemporary individuals, Kundera’s characters, especially Tomáš, choose to abdicate the responsibility that is inextricably linked to both social and moral freedom.
